biography

Jean-Laurent Domingue, RN, PhD

Jean-Laurent Domingue is a registered nurse and Associate Professor at the School of Nursing at the University of Ottawa.

After completing his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2014, he worked in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, as a bedside nurse, as a clinical manager, and as the Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Program, before joining the University of Ottawa in 2021. His research focuses on the political dimensions of nursing, particularly the care of marginalized individuals at the intersection of public health and public safety. He has expertise in qualitative health research methodologies and critical approaches, which he uses to explore how nurses interact with hegemonic structures that perpetuate systemic injustices, especially in the fields of psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. At the University of Ottawa, he teaches undergraduate courses in mental health nursing and the political and economic contexts of health care, as well as a graduate course in qualitative methodology.

Jean-Laurent is an Adjunct Scientist at The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research and an Associate Researcher at the Institut national de psychiatrie légale Philippe-Pinel.
